Glen Olsen, Conductor
Church musician, music educator and conductor, Glen has served churches in New York City, the New York metropolitan area, West Texas and now Southwest Florida. With degrees from Wheaton College (IL), Rutgers University and Drew University, Glen has taught in New Jersey, Texas and Florida. Graduate-level courses Glen has taught include Handel and the Drama of Music, Bach and the Expression of Faith, and Music Goes to the Movies.
Dr. Olsen studied organ with Gladys Christensen and David Drinkwater, and conducting with Paul Wiens and Richard Westenburg. In addition to playing organ and conducting the choirs for the churches he has served, Glen has also developed graded instrumental ensembles and chamber orchestras for most of these churches. While serving the historic Calvary Baptist Church in midtown Manhattan, Dr. Olsen had the opportunity to conduct his Calvary Chamber Orchestra accompanied a solo artist at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. Glen has also conducted the Pikes Peak Symphony in an original work of his, commissioned by the First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs for their Chancel Choir's Christmas Festival.
Glen has been exploring composition for most of his career. Beginning with choral pieces for the ensembles he conducted, he also has composed solo keyboard music, chamber works, and small orchestral pieces. He enjoys working through dissonance in music and seeing how it might be brought back to consonance - his favorite interval is the second. Some of his compositions have even been played by members of this orchestra.
